Preventing Digital Eye Strain: Simple Habits That Work

If you spend most of your day looking at a screen, you may have felt it: dry or watery eyes, a dull headache, neck strain, or blurred vision by evening. This cluster of symptoms is often called digital eye strain (or computer vision syndrome). The good news is that a few simple habits make a real difference.

Why screens tire your eyes

When we concentrate on a screen we blink far less often, which lets the tear film dry out. Holding focus at a fixed near distance for hours also keeps the eye's focusing muscles continuously tensed. Add glare, small fonts and poor posture, and discomfort builds up.

The 20-20-20 rule

The single easiest habit: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds. This lets the focusing muscles relax and reminds you to blink. Set a gentle timer until it becomes automatic.

More habits that help

  • Blink on purpose — a few slow, complete blinks restore the tear film.
  • Position the screen slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away.
  • Cut glare — avoid windows or bright lights reflecting on the screen; reduce display brightness to match the room.
  • Increase text size rather than leaning in.
  • Stay hydrated and consider a humidifier in very dry or air-conditioned rooms.

When to see an eye specialist

Occasional strain is normal, but book an eye examination if you have persistent blurred vision, frequent headaches, eye pain, or symptoms that do not improve with these habits. An up-to-date spectacle prescription often resolves a surprising amount of "screen fatigue". If you are in Jaipur and want a comprehensive eye check, a dedicated eye hospital such as Rajasthan Eye Hospital can assess your vision and eye surface health.
